Listen to our stories
Made with ink, acrylic, various mediums and paper on canvas, I build up reliefs in the shape of a variety of female silhouettes inspired by my memories of the ancient Egypt of my childhood.

I love quotes – meaningful words of varied perspectives on life that resonate. My recent focus is collecting voices of women, particularly women of color. Hopefully every woman finds someone who sounds like her, loves like her and just as important someone who doesn’t look like her and love like her.

Through these morsels of thought we can find connection and inspiration. Hearing from an endless variety of amazing women all over the world got me seeing them talking to each other, listening and supporting each other. Listen to our stories explores this vision.

Stories can conquer fear, can make a heart larger and a mind open and free. When we share our stories with each other it opens our hearts for others to share their stories and in this act we feel connected on this journey. Our identities and experiences are constantly shifting, and storytelling is how we make sense of it. We feel what they feel. We empathize. We have new questions to ponder. And hopefully we have new ways to live more fully in our worlds.

A few quotes about stories –

The ones who tell the stories shape and rule the world. ~Hopi Wisdom

I care about who you are, who you have been, who you want to be. I open myself to you to listen and learn about you. I cherish you, not just my fantasy of who you are, not just who I need you to be, but who you really are... ~Betty Berzon
Remember your roots but expand your worldview. ~Soledad Muesco Manaay

Women have often felt insane when cleaving to the truth of our experience. Our future depends on the sanity of each of us, and we have a profound stake, beyond the personal, in the project of describing our reality as candidly and fully as we can to each other. ~Adriene Rich

The single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story. ~Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

We must reject not only the stereotypes that others hold of us, but also the stereotypes that we hold of ourselves. ~ Shirley Chisholm

Solidarity between women can be a powerful force of change, and can influence future development in ways favourable not only to women but also to men. ~Nawal El-Saadawi

There is a surrendering to your story and then a knowing that you don’t have to stay in your story. ~Colette Baron Reid
